The SaaS MVP checklist: what to build first and what to skip
Launch a product that can charge money in weeks by focusing on the essentials and deferring the rest.
The goal of an MVP is learning, not completeness. The smallest product that can charge a real customer teaches you more than months of building in private.
Build first
- One core workflow that solves a specific problem end to end.
- Authentication and basic account management.
- Billing: a way to charge, even if it is a single plan. Payment links or a simple subscription are enough.
- Onboarding that gets a new user to value quickly.
- Analytics to see what people actually do.
Defer
- Complex roles and permissions.
- Dozens of integrations.
- Custom reporting and dashboards.
- Perfect design systems and animations.
Technical choices that keep options open
- A single full-stack framework such as Next.js to move fast.
- A managed Postgres database.
- Clean separation between business logic and UI so you can change either later.
Plan the first 8 weeks
Weeks 1-2: scope and design. Weeks 3-6: build the core workflow with weekly demos. Weeks 7-8: billing, onboarding, launch to a small group. Then iterate on feedback.
