Google AI Overviews: how to make your site eligible to appear
There is no special markup for AI Overviews. Here is what Google says matters and what you can do about it.
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google results, with links to sources. Many site owners ask what to change to be included.
What Google says
Google has stated that the same fundamentals apply as for regular search: your page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. There is no additional technical requirement or special markup.
What you can control
- Indexability: make sure pages are not blocked by robots rules or noindex, and appear in your sitemap.
- Helpful content: answer real questions with original insight and experience.
- Structure: clear headings, concise answers and supporting detail. See answer-first content.
- Page experience: fast, stable, mobile-friendly pages. Read our Core Web Vitals guide.
- Trust signals: author names, business details, reviews and consistent entity information.
What you cannot control
Which queries trigger an overview, which sources are chosen and how often are decided by Google. Beware of any promise to guarantee inclusion.
Measure it
Use Search Console to track impressions and clicks over time, and manually check the queries that matter to your business.
